I enjoy operating Automatic Packet Reporting System (”APRS”) both fixed station and mobile. For APRS operation, I use a Kenwood TM-D700A mobile with the call AB4BJ-2. For APRS in the shack, I use a Kenwood TM-D710A and as a fill-in digipeater (call sign is AB4BJ). I’ve included an APRS weather map corresponding to the location of my fill-in digipeater, below. I use a Byonics GPS receiver with both transceivers. This GPS receiver works very well with these radios and is avaiable pre-wired for both.
I recently acquired a Yaesu VX-8R handie-talkie that features an APRS mode. This submersible HT works very well and I’ve enjoyed using it with the optional GPS/speaker microphone. This HT has a general coverage receiver (including FM stereo) and will tansmit on 2 meters, 440 MHz and 220 MHz.
Here’s the AB4BJ-2 “stealth” mobile APRS radio (TM-D700A). Now you see it, now you don’t! You can view my mobile APRS location by clicking here.
Here’s a local weather map featuring my APRS fill-in digipeater (AB4BJ).
